ROTTEN FENCE POSTS

Change in regulations

Many of us have been there, on a windy day we arrive home at the end of a long day to find our fence has fallen down! Either that or wake up in the morning and discover a view of the next door neighbours garden that wasn’t there the night before. Puts a slight dampener on things, doesn’t it!

Slotted Concrete Posts for Fence Panels

Concrete Posts have many advantages over traditional timber, our slotted concrete posts are a popular choice when installing fence panels. Like all Supreme Posts, they are made from high strength concrete, reinforced for ultimate durability and long life. Easy to install and cost-effective, Strong-cast Slotted Concrete Posts are completely unaffected by moisture and rot and will add years of extra life to any panel fencing installation. The pro range is, in most cases, between 20-30% lighter than our previous range of concrete posts. The concrete posts should be fixed into the ground using either Blue Circle Postcrete or Remix. We also offer a local delivery service and if you need a trustworthy and reliable fencing contractor to undertake the work on your behalf, we can put you in touch with one or more of our highly recommended contractors, who have all been customers of ours for years and whose work and reputation is very well known to us.

Installing Fence Panels Using Concrete Posts

Installing concrete posts is a 2-person job (minimum) due to the heavy nature of the product and other variables. When installing posts make sure you first dig the hole to the appropriate depth. This is generally at least 2ft below the panel, e.g. for a 6ft panel, use an 8ft post etc. In some instances, it may be a good idea to dig 3 feet down – i.e. on soft ground or if in a windy area such as a hillside property. Once the hole is dug (it’s best to use a post hole spade for this to avoid digging the hole too wide) sit the post in the bottom of the hole and then ‘offer up’ the panel to ensure the finished height of the post and panel looks ok. Once this is checked and all ok, use Remix or blue circle postcrete to fix the post into the centre of the hole. Always check with a spirit level ALL sides of the post to ensure it is perfectly level before the mix sets hard (usually 10-15 mins). Whilst setting the post, it will need propping or holding to ensure it doesn’t move. whilst it’s setting, measure the width of the panel (often 6ft) and using a string line to ensure a straight fence (from the start to finish point of the fence) dig the next hole ready. Offer up the panel/gravel board and set the next post in the same way. To avoid splashing post mix on the panel/gravel board it can be raised off the ground temporarily with some blocks or similar object whilst applying postcrete, and then lowered down when set.

Fence Post Spike – Swift Clamp

fence post spike

Fence Post Spikes are typically used for the installation of timber fence posts. They allow for relatively quick and easy installation. The post spike essentially removes the need to dig a hole, as well as the need to purchase postcrete or similar product. It will keep the timber fence post above ground level, minimising rot and water ingress into the posts meaning the chance of costly repairs to your fence are greatly reduced when using this system.

  • Used to make the erection of timber fence posts easier and quicker with a flat socket base to aid the driving in of the support.
  • Manufactured with 4 fins for extra strength when driving in.
  • Single corner tightening action makes for a speedy installation but gives full adjustability.
  • Hammer into the ground using a fence post driving tool.

*Please Note: We sometimes use more than 1 supplier for this product, so the brand may sometimes vary from the photo.

Morticed Concrete Fence Posts (MRT)

Concrete posts which are morticed to take arris rails (the rails need to be shaped by hand or arris rail brackets used) and create bays of closeboard fencing. We also supply concrete 9ft 6in gravel boards to create 10ft (approx’) bays of closeboard. If you need any help or advice please don’t hesitate to get in touch and our expert staff will be glad to help. We are also able to offer a local delivery service (separate charges may apply).

These posts are available as intermediate (morticed both sides for a straight run) or alternatively as a corner post. When installing concrete posts we recommend using either Blue Circle Postcrete or Remix to fix the posts into the ground.

Birkdale Post Hole Digger – Wooden Handles

This post hole digger features 2 solid wooden handles and double digging spade ends. When installing fence posts using a normal garden spade, it is very difficult to get the ideal size and shape hole. It isn’t actually necessary to have a large hole to take a fence post, and by using a normal spade, you will usually end up with a bigger hole than is actually needed, leading to the need to use more postcrete, and therefore wasting money A post hole digging spade is designed to enable the user to dig a hole stright down into the earth, then remove the soil by squeezing the handles together and lift it out of the hole. Using this tool, which is sometimes referred to as post hole spoons, you will end up with a nice cylindrical straight hole with solid, compact edges. Using a normal spade will often lead to disruption to the surrounding soil, and again will make the hole larger than needed.
