Correct use of Silky saws

Silky Saws logo

Instructions on how to use your Silky Saw.

  1. Silky saws have been designed to cut on the pull stroke. The thin blades will not bow because they are under tension while being pulled across the surface to be cut. If your saw ever becomes caught in a branch squeeze DO NOT PUSH HARD and NEVER WRENCH OR TWIST THE HANDLE. These actions may damage the blade. Always lift the weight off the blade to release the saw.
  2. Silky’s precision engineering results in a fine kerf and therefore, only minimal force is required to cut. DO NOT use extra pressure to speed up your sawing as this can cause the teeth to. ‘Teeth can be ‘popped’ when the user is sawing with a very fast action and also pushing far too hard against the blade whilst cutting. LET THE SAW DO THE WORK for you while you pull it across the wood.
  3. Impulse hardened blades cannot be re-sharpened by a hand file.
  4. Keep your blades clean by using solvent. Keep the solvent away from the handle.
  5. When not in use, store the saw in a protective sheath and away from moisture.
  6. Neither Silky or Briants of Risborough are not responsible for any damage resulting from the misuse of Silky saws.

SILKY Sugoi 360mm Replacement Blade

SILKY Sugoi 360mm Replacement Blade

This replacement blade is for the Silky Sugoi, which is a professional, heavy duty curved pruning saw for cutting large branches. It offers a genuine alternative to using a small chainsaw. The word ‘Sugoi’ actually means ‘Incredible’ in Japanese. The curved blade offers greater cutting speed with less effort while the aggressive tooth pattern is ideal for pruning larger branches. The Sugoi uses proprietary Mirai-Me (Smooth Cutting) Technology – ‘The teeth of the future!’ The teeth ratio is relatively coarse.

SILKY Sugowaza Heavy-Duty Pruning Saw

SILKY SUGOWAZA

The Sugowaza is a heavy duty curved pruning saw for cutting large branches. It offers a genuine alternative to using a small chainsaw – a little more effort but more peaceful, no fuel cost and much more rewarding! Sugowaza actually means ‘skills at a very high level’.

With its 420mm blade and coarse teeth (6.5 teeth per 30mm) it is one of Silky’s longest and most aggressive handsaws. Its ultra-fast cutting design will make light work of branches up to 300mm in diameter.

The handle includes a chrome finished slip guard for greater safety protection and a large grooved rubber handle which is comfortable to hold, reduces vibration and provides superior grip in wet and cold conditions. Every Sugowaza comes with a custom made bright orange scabbard with a ‘D’ ring attachment and slots for leg straps if required.

The saws are designed to have replaceable blades and all other parts are also available. Sugowaza blades can be re-sharpened for longer life.

Silky Saws are manufactured from SK-4 carbon steel and cut out by laser. The teeth are designed with no set which means they are formed inside the width of the blade – this reduces friction and enables a cleaner, faster and easier cut. Many other saws have teeth formed to project outside the width of the blade requiring much greater effort when sawing.

There are 4 razor sharp cutting angles on the inside of each tooth. Silky call this ‘Mirae-Me’ and it enables the blade to cut smoothly through the branch, significantly reducing splintering and producing a very fine smooth cut. The super fine cut destroys up to 50% less wood cells allowing the tree to heal faster and reduces the risk of disease.

The blades are chrome plated which helps protect against rust and sap as well as providing additional strength. This helps extend the life of the blade. They are also tapered from the tooth tip to the back spine to reduce resistance and deliver smoother, easier and faster cutting performance.

Almost all Silky saws are fitted with a specially designed rubber ‘GOM’ handle which reduces vibration and improves grip, reducing the danger of slipping in wet conditions.

SILKY Bigboy Folding Saw – Medium Teeth 350-36

BIGBOY 350-36

Silky’s Bigboy multi-purpose folding saw provides a greater reach than a standard folding saw, due to its 360mm straight blade, and can be used for a wide range of pruning work and garden maintenance.

The precision-ground, razor sharp blade has four cutting angles along the length of the saw and provides a fast, clean and smooth cutting action.

Long well-balanced taper-ground blades with impulse-hardened non-set tooth design provide extended working reach, faster cutting and handles large limbs and small trunks with little effort.

The non-slip two-handed, rubberised, cushioned handle provides a sure and comfortable grip, even in the most difficult operating conditions.

This is an ideal multi-purpose folding saw for cutting big jobs down to size. Utilises proprietary Silky ‘Mirai-Me’ technology.

It is not possible to re-sharpen the blade but the saws are designed to have replaceable blades. Other parts are also available. There is just one screw to unwind in order to change the blade.

SILKY Ono Hatchet

SILKY Ono Hatchet

This European-style axe is characterised by its full tang blade and superior finish for smooth chopping and debarking. The Ono is exceptionally well balanced and its 12 cm double ground blade offers many possibilities for camping and bushcraft.

Because the blade runs through the handle, this axe feels robust and sturdy and offers you great control. The steel is encased by Silky’s Genki grip, consisting of just two rubber parts without any screws or bolts. The handle can easily be zipped off the blade without the use of any tools and vibrations are maximally damped.

The Ono comes with a durable nylon sheet to protect the blade, and your fingers. The hole in both the handle, blade and the sheet makes it easy to secure or hang this tool.

SILKY Nata Machete

SILKY NATA

The Nata is a cross between a knife and an axe. The blade is perfectly weighted to swing smoothly, to ensure a very efficient cut. Ideal for removing tree/shrub limbs and clearing brush.

The semi-square tip of the Nata helps put weight-forward and gives good balance, plus the rubber handle gives great grip and takes almost the entire “jarring” effect that machetes can have.

The blades can be re-sharpened using a normal whetstone.

The blades are made from a special alloy using traditional Japanese sword steel making methods and is designed to keep its edge longer, even with continual use.

The Genki rubber grip absorbs the shock, the vibrations are hardly transmitted to the hand or arm, making it ideal for heavy duty applications. The blade is perfectly weighted to swing smoothly to ensure a very efficient cut.

Comes with a hard plastic sheath and easy-release belt clip.

SILKY F180 Folding Pruning Saw – 180mm

SILKY F180 PRUNING SAW

The Silky F180 folding pruning saw is a lightweight yet robust entry level folding saw, and is one of our fastest selling saws at Briants. Its design and build is aimed at the domestic end of the market, and will be used predominantly for pruning around the home, garden and other areas. For the home gardener looking for a quality, but cost effective pruning saw, look no further than the Silky F180. The blade itself is 180mm long, impulse hardened, Chrome plated and ‘Mirai-Me’ (terms explained below). It’s blade features 7.5 teeth per 30mm and will lock in two different positions to allow flush cutting. The blade is not suitable for sharpening, however we can supply replacement F180 blades and also keep a range of spare blades and parts for other Silky Saws. To replace the blade it is just one screw which needs to be undone on the handle of the saw. The handle itself has been manufactured from ‘fibreglass polypropylene’ and has a rubber insert and sure grip which reduces the risk of slipping, even in wet conditions or when wearing gloves.

How is this Folding Pruning Saw Made?

The SK-4 carbon steel used to make the blade is laser cut. The teeth, designed with no set, are formed within the width of the blade, reducing friction leading to a much cleaner, smoother and faster cut, compared to the majority of other pruning saws whose teeth may be formed to project outside of the blade width, which leads to far more effort needed from the user to make a cut.

The inside of each tooth has 4 razor sharp cutting angles, which is what Silky’s ‘MIRAI-ME’ term refers to. It essentially means that when the blade cuts through the branch, the amount of splintering is reduced so the cut is much finer, and will destroy up to 50% less cells within the wood, which cuts the risk of disease and means the tree will heal far faster than if it were to be cut with a non MIRAI-ME blade.

Silky also use high-frequency electro-impulse hardening during their manufacturing process, during which the teeth are heated up and hardened off for added strength. In fact, a Silky saw could stay sharp for as much as 3 times longer than a non impulse hardened equivalent.  The key to this process is making sure the teeth are the only part of the blade that is ‘impulse hardened’ leaving the main body of the blade to retain it’s flexibility. A chrome plating is added to the blade to protect against rusting and sap adhesion to even further extend the lifespan of the blade.

SILKY Bigboy 2000 Folding Saw

SILKY Bigboy 2000 Folding Saw

The SILKY Bigboy saw is one of the largest folding saws available in the SILKY saw range and, apart from the Katanaboy, it gives a longer reach than all the folding pruning saws we keep in stock. The cutting performance is absolutely staggering and the 360mm hard chrome-plated blade features a low angle 2000mm radius curve. This pruning saw will easily tear through tree branches with the minimum of effort. When pruning trees with the Silky Bigboy 2000, as with all Silky saws, always let the saw do the work when cutting through a branch. Only light pressure is required when cutting as the razor-sharp teeth will do the rest.  One crucial thing to remember is to never twist the blade when in use as this will cause the blade to break. This is the case with any pruning saw, but especially Silky because, as you’ll discover, the razor sharp blade requires only a very small amount of pressure to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

The non-slip, 2-handed handle of the saw is rubber cushioned and the saw is very well balanced for an ergonomic and comfortable cutting experience. The Silky Bigboy 2000 is suitable for cutting through large branches, as well as small tree trunks. The blade is taper-ground with impulse-hardened non-set teeth. Replacement blades for this and every other Silky saw we stock are usually in stock and available to buy.

Impulse Hardening

The teeth of the Pocket Boy 130 saw blade are heated using a special high frequency heating technique which instantly hardens the metal. Due to the way this technique is performed, it’s only the teeth that are impulse hardened, therefore the rest of the metal on the blade will retain its flexibility. Because of this process the teeth of the saw will stay harder up to 3 times longer than a non-hardened equivalent.

Ergonomically designed handles

Silky handles are all comfortable and non-slip, even in wet conditions and wearing gloves, due to their high-tech rubber compound makeup.

Is there a correct way to use a Pocket Boy 130 Silky Saw?

There certainly is! A Silky blade will only cut on the pull stroke, and they will require very little pressure to cut through wood in an efficient manner. The kerf of blade has been designed in such a way that it will bite and glide though the wood without needing any excessive pressure placed upon it during the cut. Adding extra pressure or wrenching and twisting the saw blade may lead to breakages. We have sold Silky saws at Briants for many years and faults, not down to misuse, are genuinely a very rare occurrence.

SILKY Katanaboy Folding Saw – 500mm

The Silky Katanaboy is a beefy two-handed folding saw. It’s considered Silky’s answer to the ‘man-powered chain saw.’ Currently the biggest in its class, this heavy-duty folding saw with a resharpenable blade of superior quality steel, which easily competes with a chainsaw. Expect to make mincemeat out of any firewood-sized limbs with a KATANABOY that packs a taper-ground blade with a non-slip rubberized grip. The KATANABOY comes with a sturdy, nylon shoulder bag with Velcro fastening and pocket for replacement blades. Translated into English, Katana means, ‘curved single-edged sword,’ considered the weapon of choice for Samurai warriors. Today, the KATANABOY is the folding saw of choice for trail building, ATVing as well as all of your outdoor needs.

The long, well-balanced, taper-ground blade with an impulse-hardened, non-set tooth design provides extended working reach, faster cutting and handles large tree limbs and trunks with little effort. The non-slip, two-handed, rubberised, cushioned handle provides a sure and comfortable grip even in the most difficult operating conditions. The saws come with a sturdy nylon shoulder bag with Velcro fastening and a pocket for replacement blades.

It is possible to re-sharpen the blade using a feather edge file. In addition, the blades and all other parts are also replaceable. (We don’t hold Katanaboy blades, but they can be ordered) There is just one screw to unwind in order to change the blade.

How to use the Silky Katanaboy correctly

Silky Saws are traditional Japanese pruning saws and as such are designed to cut on the pull stroke. The blade will be under tension on the cutting stroke and will not be able to bow.

Let the saw do the work. Never force the blade on the push stroke as you will be pushing against the direction of the teeth. Carefully take the pressure off the blade in order to release the saw.

Generally you should experience fewer vibrations and use less effort enabling longer work and improved productivity.

The saw should be stored in the closed position and cleaned of any debris/dirt to ensure a smooth opening operation. Ideally the blade should be cleaned with a solvent, being careful to keep it away from the handle – this will help prolong its useful life. Store away from moisture.

WARNING. NEVER CUT DIRECTLY ABOVE YOUR HEAD. Always consider where the falling branches will land on the ground. We strongly recommend the use of protective hard hats and glasses.

WARNING. The Silky Katanaboy is extremely sharp so please be careful when using and keep away from children.

MANUFACTURER WARNING. Incorrect use of a Silky Saw may cause injury. Silky, its affiliates, subsidiaries, importers, distributors and dealers are not responsible for and shall not be liable for any fatality, injury, loss, or damage resulting from the use of its products.

NON-SET TEETH – Blades are made from SK-4 high carbon steel and taper ground i.e. thicker at the tooth edge, thinner at the back of the blade. This taper reduces resistance giving smoother, easier, faster cutting performance.

SHARPENABLE – Because impulse-hardening is not applied, the blades marked with this symbol can be sharpened with a file.

MIRAI-ME SMOOTH COATING – The teeth of the future! Blades have precision ground, razor sharp teeth with 4 cutting angles along their length. They leave an especially smooth surface after cutting and are ideal for pruning, greatly reducing the risk of infection. They can rip-cut, cross-cut and slant-cut.

HARD CHROME PLATING – Hard chrome plating produces an exceedingly hard, durable surface. The blades are resistant to rust and the effects of resin. They are finely or mirror polished and wipe clean easily.

RUBBER HANDLE – Almost all Silky saws have rubber compound elastomer handles, either inserted or vulcanised to ABS plastic or steel. Rubber handles are more comfortable to hold, reduce vibration and offer superior grip in the cold and wet.

SILKY Tsurugi 300mm Pruning Saw

SILKY Tsurugi 300mm Pruning Saw

The Silky Tsurugi range introduces a straight saw with a very narrow blade which is ideal for pruning dense trees and enables the user to get into tight areas such as the fork of a branch. Due to Silky’s renowned design skills there is no compromise to either the strength of the blade or its cutting ability. Tsurugi actually means ‘long sword’ in English.

The Tsurugi medium teeth are set at 10 teeth per 30mm for a even smoother finish when cutting dryer and/or harder wood.

The saws come with a comfortable handle which is composed of 2 parts and enables a replacement blade to be fitted without tools. The saw comes with a specially designed aluminium holster which can be attached to a belt and there are slots for leg straps.

Tsurugi blades cannot be re-sharpened due to the use of electro-impulse hardening in the manufacturing process, but of course we can supply a replacement blade if needed.

The manufacturing process also uses the technique of high-frequency electro-impulse hardening during which the teeth are heated and hardened. Importantly, only the teeth are hardened, not the rest of the blade. Thus the blade retains its original flexibility whilst the teeth have a life which is up to 3 times longer than that on standard saws.

The blades are also chrome plated which helps protect against rust and sap as well as providing additional strength. This helps extend the life of the blade.

Almost all Silky saws are fitted with a specially designed rubber ‘GOM’ handle which reduces vibration and improves grip, reducing the danger of slipping in wet conditions.
